No, the new Kendrick Lamar album is still not here, but you can hear Kendrick featured on a new single by SZA called Babylon. This track is tight! Both Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper are the big names on the Z EP by SZA (say that three times fast!), but Emile Hayne, DJ Dahi, Mac Miller and Toro Y Moi all helped with production in one way or another. According to an article at Spin, two of K-Dot’s lines include “I ain’t have nothing to lose / My dark side been running tuned.”
The track is really spaced out – in a good way. You’d expect something like this from the Black Hippy crowd and this song doesn’t disappoint. What’s cool is that the song was actually released last month. With new work, however, this remix is quickly becoming popular on the internet. The original was really “out there” but by adding some Hiii Power via Kendrick Lamar, the song’s aural harmonies take the whole thing to the next level.
According to the Styleite blog:
SZA happens to be bothTop Dawg Entertainment‘s only female artist and one of its hottest talents, weaving her own gauzy vocals into otherworldly soundscapes. To celebrate the EP, she’s has dropped a new version of previously-unveiled Lamar-featuring track ‘Babylon‘. “
Over at Billboard, they go into a little more depth about SZA and the track featuring Kendrick Lamar.
“Z” sounds like the future, or at least SZA’s vision of one — a genre agnostic utopia dripping with mood and SZA’s own gossamer vocals. “Z” straddles the line between minimalist R&B, ’80s synth pop and soul. It sounds like Jill Scott in a pillow fight with Jessy Lanza. It sounds like a Frank Ocean fever dream.
The rest of that article goes into how SZA hooked up with Top Dawg Entertainment and also explains what she brings to the table – which is a lot of talent. Having said that, Kendrick Lamar being featured on the track is some of the reason this song is getting so much attention right now.
