Kendrick Lamar Talking about Molly
MTV’s Sway Calloway interviews Kendrick Lamar on his views on Molly. This was brought up by Lamar’s famous video “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe”, at the end the words “Death To Molly” flash the screen.
Molly is the pure powder or crystallized form of MDMA, a drug that is mixed with others to create ecstasy pills. Molly, the pure form of MDMA is used and abused because of it’s euphoric effects on it’s users. Now it has leaked it’s way into the music of rappers today. Enough musicians like The Weeknd, Trinadad James, Mac Miller, etc have laced Molly into their lyrics, so much so that it has become a trend. Lamar looks back on when Jay Z changed from basketball jerseys to button ups, evolving a fashion trend with his 2003 single “Change Clothes.” He says trends like that are fine, but is against the new trend of promoting this popular party drug in music because it starts to pollute the music industry.
“You may have certain artists portraying these trends and don’t really have that lifestyle and then it gives off the wrong thing. And it becomes kinda corny after a while,” he states without singling out any particular artist. He then goes on to say, “When everybody consciously now uses this term or this phrase and putting it in lyrics, it waters the culture down. So it’s really just time to move on.”
It seems like speaking out against drugs is becoming a new trend with Macklemore’s “Otherside” and now Kendrick Lamar with his declaration of “Death on Molly” in his “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” video. It is nice to see rappers promoting against the use of drugs rather than glamorizing that lifestyle.
