Kendrick Lamar caps off local festival

The rapper is one of 2015’s biggest stars, thanks to his commercially and critically adored “To Pimp a Butterfly.” The album helped him earn 11 Grammy nominations going into next year, the most of any act.

He closed out Sunday in front of the weekend’s biggest crowd, just before the Miss Universe Pageant. Lamar sauntered onstage to roars of approval, flashed a huge smile and launched into the rapid-fire “For Free?”

He was backed by a live band, and it gave every song – “Backseat Freestyle,” “Swimming Pools (Drank),” “These Walls” – a forceful, well-rounded sound. DJ and producer Dillon Francis packed the indoor Green Stage with ballcapped bros and neon club kids. They bounced along with every beat.
